Most menus have pictures of the sushi, but it can sometimes be difficult to know exactly what you are ordering. These days many restaurants, especially in big cities, will have English menus, but if not bring along a good translation app.

Where can I get it?
The cheapest places to go are convener belt sushi restaurants, called kaiten-sushi (回転寿司). They are not as numerous as you may think, so ask someone for where ‘kaiten-sushi’ is if you can’t see one.
One well known cheap chain is Kappa Sushi (かっぱ寿司). They often have sushi plates for as cheap as 90 yen (with 2 pieces!) and have funny items such as hamburger sushi. Plus the sushu comes around on a little Shinkansen train! Here is what the restaurant looks like, so look out for that 100 yen (１００円) sign, even if it’s another chain.
All towns and cities will have a cheap sushi place, so if you have trouble finding one, ask for your hotels recommendation. Supermarkets also sell reasonable sushi and sashimi.
