JR Tokyo Metropolitan District Pass

Matthew Baxter

The Tokyo Metropolitan District Pass, also known as the Tokunai Pass, allows unlimited use of JR lines (national rail) in Tokyo for one day.  Great for exploring the cities within the city that is Tokyo.

What does it cost?

Adults 750 yen, Children 370 yen

When can I use it?

Anytime.

Is it worth it?

A great pass if you are only going to major places in Tokyo with JR stations, such as Shinjuku, Shibuya, Harajuku, Akihabara and Ueno.  It also allows you to go out of the center to places like Koenji.  But it only makes sense if you are going to 3/4 of these places in one day.  If not, just get individual tickets.

Most places in central Tokyo are not near JR stations.  If you want to go to more downtown areas, consider the Tokyo Metro Open Ticket.

What are the rules?

  • Cannot be used on Metro trains, private lines or Toei subway lines.
  • Cannot be used on Limited Express or Shinkansen trains.

Where can I buy it?

You can buy it from ticket machines or at the ticket office of most JR stations, for example Shinjuku, Shibuya or Ueno.
