Koyasan World Heritage Ticket

Matthew Baxter

The Koyasan World Heritage Ticket, featured in my Super Cheap Japan guide, is the cheapest and easiest way to visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Koyasan.  It provides a return ticket, including use of the cable car, and unlimited use of buses.  In addition it gets you discounts at the UNESCO World Heritage Sites and a few of the souvenir shops.

What does it cost?

2 day Pass: 2,780 yen

When can I use it?

Anytime.

Is it worth it?

Definitely, especially in the winter when it’s just too cold to walk everywhere.  You will end up using the bus a lot to travel around any time of the year, and a return ticket is about the same price.

What are the rules?

  • You need to may a little extra for Limited Express tickets.
  • Must only be used on Nankai trains and on the cable car.  OK for all buses in Koyasan.
  • You cannot leave the train network before/after Koyasan and then continue your journey.

Where can I buy it?

You can buy it at major Nankai (private line) stations in Osaka, such Nankai Nanba station (next to Nanba subway station).  You will be given a free tourist map.

How do I use it?

For the trains, just put the pass into the ticket gate, then take out the other side.   For buses, show your bus pass to the driver when you leave the bus. To get discounts at UNESCO World Heritage Sites, rip off the related part of your ticket envelope and show it when you buy your entry ticket.
