Yakisoba (Fried Noodles)

Matthew Baxter

Most people have already tried Japanese noodles, Yakisoba, before in their home country, but they are a little different in Japan. They make for a very cheap meal, and with all the vegetables can be reasonably healthy. Yakisoba is basically stir-fried noodles with pork, plus vegetables such as cabbage, carrot or bean sprouts.

You can also make Yakisoba by yourself and save! Just get some Yakisoba noodles from a supermarket, stir fry them with the powder included and some meat, then add your preferred vegetables. It’s as simple as that.

Price: 400-500 yen

Name in Japanese: yakisoba/焼きそば

Where can I buy it?

Yakisoba is always available at festivals, and as these are so frequent in Japan you may come across Yakisoba at one of these. You will also find cheap Yakisoba take-out restaurants in most shopping streets and near train stations, and there will be pictures outside so they are easy to notice. Yakisoba is also available at bento shops.
