Japanese curry. Some love it (me!), for some nothing to write home about. But it’s something that has to be tried and is one of the cheapest lunch and dinner options for budget travellers in Japan. The sauce is probably sweeter than most foreigners are used to, and the standard options are not too spicy. Those who like spicy food can often choose from different spice levels, all the way up to level 10! Various toppings are also available, with all kinds of meats and vegetables.

Where can I buy it?
Our favourite is CoCoIchiban curry house (カレーハウスCoCo壱番屋), which we consider to be an essential visit for anyone visiting Japan. It’s the biggest curry restaurant chain in the world, so quite easy to find or come across. They have a multi-lingual menu in stores and on their Official Site. In all tourist areas or stations you will be near a curry house. Also try the Gyudon chains for a curry, which are a lot cheaper but not quite as tasty.
