Sounkyo Hot Spring
A favourite for budget hikers and those wanting to get away from it all in an onsen (hot spring). Take the ropeways or hike up Kurodake mountain for some breathtaking views. Mid-September to early October.
Asahidake and Daisetsuzan Ginsendai
Hike up into the stunningly colored mountains in this vast national park. Possible to hike all the way to Sounkyo from here, for a multi-day autumn leaves experience. Mid to late September.
Jozankei Gorge
Chill out the Momiji Kappa Bus (October 1st-21st) as it takes you around what many consider the best Autumn leaves spots in Japan. There is also a gondola service and hiking available. Access from Sapporo station for Jozankei Onsen (75 mins, 770 yen).
Hokkaido University
Located in the heart of Sapporo, Hokkaido University’s grounds are free to explore. The main road is lined with gingko trees, so with the university’s traditional buildings this is a rather unique autumn leaves spot. Early September to late October.
Tokachidake
Next to and on the way to Tokachi Onsen, get away from all the crowds at this quiet spot for autumn leaves. Do a bit of hiking or just relax in the hot springs surrounded by all the golden and red leaves! Mid to late September.
