Konnichi wa, I'm Matthew Baxter

I'm a bestselling author of Japan travel guides, most notably Super Cheap Japan. I currently live Tokyo, the heart of Japan, and have been here for more than 10 years. Having traveled across the country for many years, without much money, I have built up an extensive knowledge of budget and off-the-beaten track travel in the Land of the Rising Sun. I also write professionally for several websites and publications, such as the Japan National Tourist Association, GaijinPot, Japan Visitor and All About Japan.

Besides traveling around all the amazing villages, towns and cities that Japan has to offer, I'm a big onsen (hot spring) fan, and can never resist a Japanese curry at CoCoIchi curry house.

My mission

My mission is to create the ultimate guidebooks for low-cost and adventurous travel in Japan. I want travelers from across the world to use my books, so they can have a chance to enjoy Japan’s best tourist spots on the cheap, or can get away from tourist hotspots if they so desire. My books focus on getting the most out of these wonderful places, whether you are a backpacker, budget traveler, worker or student.

My books across the world

  • “...the author fulfils his mission to keep Japan both affordable and authentically enjoyable for tourists. There is a good balance between an overview of the usual tourist spots and quirkier recommendations that allows travellers to maximise their enjoyment of a singular country while minimising their budget.”

    - Hector Garcia, author of the best-selling A Geek in Japan and Ikigai books

  • “Lots of great tips and tricks for saving money on your Japan visit! The book covers many areas in great detail, and it is certainly a very useful book for anybody planning a trip to Japan.”

    - Abby Denson, author of the best-selling Cool Japan Guide
