What is a Goshuin?
A goshuin (御朱印) is a red stamp given to visitors of Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples in Japan as proof of their visit. The stamp is accompanied by beautifully hand-written calligraphy, which will contain elements such as a spiritual or seasonal message, or the name of a deity enshrined there.

What’s a Goshuincho?
This is a special notebook that you need in order to collect a goshuin at temples or shrines. They are made with traditional, textured washi paper.
It's also recommended to keep shrine and temple goshuin in separate books, as stricker temples or shrines may refuse to mix them together.

How do I get the stamps?
Most shrines or temples offer goshuin. You'll need to find a Goshuin office, called a 'goshuinjo' in Japanese (御朱印所). Next, present an open page of your goshuincho and pay the fee (usually 300 yen to 500 yen in cash). The temple staff will then apply the stamps and write the calligraphy, usually in front of your eyes!
