Hida Furukawa is a nice little day trip from Takayama. It is a compact town with some nice traditional streets showing off some rather beautiful, very Japanese architecture. It’s quieter and calmer than Takayama.

- Download this useful town map or get one from the Tourist Information Center outside of Hidafurukawa Station south exit.
- It’s best to just get this map and take your time walking around. There are lots of nice little shops, displays and cafes around.
Things to do
Old Town Area
Pick up a map and take a stroll around this wonderful little shopping and shrine area. It may be a quiet place, but there is lots to see.
Street Canal
Make sure you don’t miss this, a street lined with a canal and white stone buildings.
Mishima Japanese Traditional Candle Shop (FREE)
Have a peek inside to see how Japanese candles are made. These guys are hardcore candle makers!
Hida Furukawa Festival Exhibition Hall
Full of information about the big town festival, with some Japanese festival floats on display.

Temples (FREE)
There are lots of simple, but stunning temples scattered around the old town area. Most are left open all the time and are free to enter.
How to get there
First, get to Takayama. From Takayama station, take the JR Takayama Main Line to Hidafurukawa Station (230 yen, 15 mins).
